BIRZEBBUGIA TIGERS vs SANTA LUCIA 4 - 2

Birzebbugia Tigers made a flying start to their 2006/07 IASC 1 division campaign when they beat last year's champions Santa Lucia by four goals to two in a roller-coaster match which saw the Tigers go behind early in the match but making a remarkable comeback in the second period aided by a Ronnie Celeste hat-trick.

It was indeed a historic day as for the first time in the club's history, Birzebbugia Tigers played on artificial turf. Infact as from this season all IASC competitions have migrated from Santa Lucia ground to Tarxien Complex. The match began on a quiet note and it was not until the 10th minute that our opponents went close with a Sciortino shot that was well saved by P.Celeste. After 16 minutes the Tigers went behind when an unmarked R.Ellul entered the penalty area from the right flank and beat Celeste from close range. There was an immediate reaction by the men in orange and on 23 minutes, Ronnie Celeste opened his account when he unleashed a powerful shot from just outside the area that flew past the helpless Carabott in Sta. Lucia's goalposts. The Tigers continued to surge forward and Thornton and Schwienbacher both went close with long-range efforts.

The Tigers took the lead after 20 minutes in the second half when from a Schwienbacher corner kick, Neville Farrugia was quick to deviate into the net for a deserved lead. Soon afterwards, the gap was widened furthermore when Ronnie Celeste from close range beat Carabott to make the score 3-1. Santa Lucia's reaction was immediate and it took a couple of saves out of Paul Celeste to deny our opponents from scoring. On the other end, debutant Thornton could have sealed matters but after a swift counter-attack he saw his shot going wide. Santa Lucia reduced the deficit in injury time when Grima anticipated Galea and had no difficulty in beating P.Celeste. But right from the kick off, Ronnie Celeste restored the two-goal lead, when precisely from the centre of the pitch saw Carabott off his goal line and scored with a magnificent shot that finished coolly in an empty net.

Line-Up: 1-Paul Celeste; 2-Matthew Scicluna, 4-Daniel Galea, 5-Mark Migneco, 3-John Paul Barbara (16-Jean Paul Busuttil); 7-Matthew Axiaq (13-Charlton Camilleri), 6-Stefan Schwienbacher (capt), 11-Denis Caruana; 8-Edmond Thornton, 9-Neville Farrugia, 10-Ronnie Celeste
