BIRZEBBUGIA TIGERS vs COSPICUA ST THOMAS 2 - 2

Birzebbugia Tigers earned their second consecutive draw when they shared four goals in an entertaining match with last season's winner Cospicua St Thomas.

The Tigers had a positive start to the match when they searched for an opening goal right from the first whistle. Defender Xuereb went close with a header which went wide after three minutes. In a swift counter attack, Cospicua goalie-turned-striker Attard's incursion created havoc in the Tigers' defence but Mangion produced a timely save to deny the opponents from taking the lead. After 9 minutes, the Tigers opened the score when Barbara's right-footed volley from outside the area finished at the back of the net.

Cospicua went close to equalise when Catania found himself unmarked in the penalty area but blasted wide. In the 24th minute the Tigers doubled the score when Axiaq went through the Cospicua's rearguard and beat Farrugia from close range.

With two goals in the arrears, Cospicua began vehemently the second period in order to readdress the match and after just two minutes they were awarded a penalty when Cachia was harshly judged to have fouled Catania in the penalty area. From the spot-kick Brignone made no mistake. Cospicua surged even forward for an equaliser and they were awarded for their efforts in the 12th minute when Catania's shot from outside the area left Mangion helpless and finished at the back of the net.

The Tigers went out of their defensive shell trying to regain the lead. J.Camilleri was fouled when he broke free of Cospicua's last defender but the referee turned away the tigers' legitimate protests for a red-card to Cospicua's Ellul. In the 26th minute captain Schwienbacher was unlucky to see his direct freekick hit the woodwork with Farrugia well-beaten. The same player was again close with another freekick soon afterwards which was turned away by Cospicua's defence. The last chance fell to Attard who produced a solo effort only to see his shot going wide. It would have been a harsh defeat for the Tigers who now lie mid-table two points adrift of leaders Zurrieq.
