BIRZEBBUGIA TIGERS vs COSPICUA ST THOMAS 1 - 3

Birzebbugia Tigers' hopes of maintaining first division status were dealt a blow when they suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Cospicua St Thomas. The Tigers' position is all but comfortable as they now lay in the red zone with only two points from four games.

Hoping to make amends to the defeat against Mosta Gunners, Schwienbacher opted for a 4-4-2 formation. Returning from suspension was skipper Noel Tabone, but the Tigers had to do without central defender M.Ciappara who was serving a one-match ban. The match began on a quite note with no clear chances at either end. In their first attack, the Tigers went close through an effort by N.Farrugia while shortly afterwards, Formosa tried his luck with a shot that went wide. Anthero Agius was booked for an offense on a Cospicua forward as goal-scoring opportunities continued to be few and far in between with both Xerxen and Attard quite inoperative during this first period.

Forward J.P.Barbara was introduced during the interval to boost the Tigers' attack. This move seemed successful as in the 8th minute Birzebbugia Tigers opened the score. E.Attard rushed to the edge of his penalty area to intercept a through-ball thrown at N.Farrugia, with the ball finishing in the path of Ronnie Celeste, who lobbed the ball in an open net from about twenty-five metres away. The joy was short-lived as after 5 minutes Larry Lagana unleashed a shot from outside the Tigers' penalty after a blunder in the defense, to level the score for Cospicua. Our opponents now took control of the game and it was no surprise when Tirchett rocketed through the defense and after rounding the onrushing Xerxen, deposited in an empty net to put Cospicua in advantage. The Blues could have enlarged their advantage when Tirchett hit the post with a header. D.Galea then came to the rescue for the Tigers, when he blocked a close-range effort from the usual Tirchett. There was also time left for a third goal scored by Johan Spiteri and for an unfortunate injury to the generous Agius.
